Young Voices, Big Sound: Celebrating the Irish Youth Music Awards National Day 2026
On Saturday, May 9th, young musicians from across Ireland will gather at the Axis Theatre for one of the most exciting youth arts events of the year, the Irish Youth Music Awards (IYMAs) National Day 2026.
Led by Youth Work Ireland, the IYMAs National Day is far more than a music showcase. It is a celebration of creativity, confidence, community, and youth voice, bringing together talented young artists from 21 regional hubs across the island of Ireland.
From singer-songwriters and spoken word performers to energetic bands and hard-hitting metal acts, the event captures the incredible diversity of young musical talent emerging from local communities nationwide. Months of rehearsals, workshops, mentoring, and regional performances all lead to this one unforgettable day of live music, collaboration, and connection.
As Shane Gately, Youth Work Ireland’s Youth Development Officer (Arts & Creativity), explains:
“From the first selection gig to our last, we’ve witnessed extraordinary talent, showcasing everything from powerful solo acts to full-blown face melting metal. Each young artist brings courage, energy, and originality to the stage.”
But the IYMAs are about more than performance. At its core, the programme is rooted in youth development. Through music and creativity, young people are given opportunities to explore identity, build resilience, strengthen confidence, and develop meaningful connections with others.
The programme is powered by youth workers, hub leaders, volunteers, and local youth services who support young people every step of the way. Their work helps create safe and encouraging spaces where creativity can thrive.
Shane also highlighted the importance of these support networks:
“They not only guide young people as artists through the creative process, but also help build confidence, resilience, and self-awareness in a supportive environment.”
Throughout the National Day, participants will not only perform live but also take part in workshops, discussions, networking opportunities, and collaborative activities designed to inspire and connect young creatives from different backgrounds and communities.
The event also reflects the importance of partnership and collective support in sustaining youth arts initiatives. Support from organisations including IMRO, RTÉ 2FM, and RAAP continues to strengthen the programme and create opportunities for young musicians across Ireland.
As anticipation builds for this year’s celebration, the IYMAs continue to demonstrate the transformative power of youth work and the arts, creating spaces where young people are heard, valued, and empowered.
