For FDYS’ Pride celebration for 2021, young people came together and came up with ideas and concepts around the themes of Community and Visibility and for the month of June the groups will be taking to the streets of Wexford to raise the Rainbow flag and celebrate Pride. Some of the initiatives have included
- Raising the Rainbow flag at Wexford County Council Building
- Getting Rainbow flags to line the entire Wexford bridge for the very first time in Wexford’s history
- A visibility and inclusion campaign that targets local Wexford businesses in order to raise awareness, education and increase visibility and feelings of safety for the LGBT+ community around Wexford.
- Young people met with Mayor Leonard Kelly to propose the flag raisings and to support our visibility campaign. Thankfully, everything was approved and Wexford bridge is now lined in Rainbow flags for the first time.
For the visibility campaign, young people thought it would be a great idea to get stickers printed. With these, young people set a date where they would approach as many local businesses as possible to explain what the campaign is all about, and ask them to support it. They also will be highlighting the importance of visibility. The stickers will be given to those businesses/ organisations/ charities who support the initiative and ask them to display it on their window for everybody to see, and to indicate that they welcome and support the LGBT+ community.
